The Council welcomes petitions and recognises they are one way in which people can let us know of their concerns.

All petitions should comply with our petitions policy and can be related to issues that affect the residents of Essex.

Make Epping Forests Roads safer for use

Review and address the road safety issues for Horse Riders, pedestrians and cyclists in and around the Epping Forest area of Epping Forest district.

For many years repeated requests have been made for a crossing at Honey Lane to no avail and recently there has been a double fatal Horse accident plus cycling accidents in the near vacinity.

There have been recent traffic schemes such as Red lines delivered and expired at significant cost upond private land owners request and we the undersigned wish to petition the council to stop focusing on private requests and look towards making the roads safer to use in and around the forest rather than support income generation schemes like car parking charges.

We need an overall assesment and delivery of suitable traffic schemes that enable safe use of the roads around the forest.

This petition has been reviewed and the following response has been offered:

Dear Epping Forest Forum

Thank you for your online petition regarding road safety concerns around the Epping Forest area.

The following Local Highways Panel (LHP) Scheme is selected in the area to address width restriction and signage which was funded in 21/22:

  1. Old Shire Lane, Honey Lane, Farthingdale Lane and Stoney Bridge Drive, Waltham Abbey - HGV movement

The two below potential schemes have been submitted to the LHP by the Essex County Councillor Cllr Kane and are being reviewed as schemes:

1. Leverton School Honey Lane, Waltham Abbey - Traffic Calming

2. A121 Honey Lane, The Volunteer, Waltham Abbey - Relocate bus stop

I can confirm that there are over 6 different types of schemes submitted to the LHP since 2016 to the present day.

We would need to know more specifically about a crossing for what area along Honey Lane ? And this would need to be submitted via a scheme request by the County Councillor as the request for ‘delivery of traffic schemes to enable safe use of the roads around the forest’ is too generic.

It is advised to contact your County Councillor and the below scheme request can be completed.

I trust this information is of assistance.

Kind regards

Cllr Lee Scott
