Carry out a full inspection of the B172 (Abridge Road) between Abridge and Theydon Bois and rectify dangerous surface erosion and potholes

CI am petitioning for Highways to carry out a full inspection of the B172 (Abridge Road) between Abridge and Theydon Bois and rectify dangerous surface erosion and potholes

The B172 is classed as a PR2 (County Route) road, the majority of its length is a 60mph unlit road and it has been allowed to fall into a state of complete disrepair.  This is also a major alternative route when there is an issue on the M25.

After the snowfall in early December the road surface was completely eroded outside the property Highview, heading into Abridge.  This road is supposed to be subject to quarterly inspections and between now and then there must have been such an inspection and I am surprised that this isn’t highlighted/repairs scheduled.

There are numerous reports on your ‘Track It’ portal – example (Enquiry Reference: 2811796) nor has he road been marked and you are deeming that this is a 'Green - A defect has been identified, the issue will be programmed for repair according to how we prioritise highway issues', there are numerous other reports on this stretch of road some dated 9th February with a response "An inspector will carry out an initial assessment to determine the next appropriate action, which may include a site visit. This could take up to 28 days. Please continue to check for updates", is that 28 calendar days, 28 working days as its not clear 28 calendar days have definitely passed

This stretch of road means vehicles practically have to come to a halt to negotiate the total erosion of the road surface which is an accident waiting to happen, personally I have been overtaken on this stretch as the person behind has no idea of the state of the road as you have not deemed it necessary to put up signs warning of the road surface – even though it was deemed necessary to put a Uneven Road Ahead Sign on the Abridge side of the M11 flyover where there a couple more areas of eroded road surface – there is loose gravel from the eroded surface which is another hazard on a road of that speed limit and now the erosion is spreading over the other carriageway.
Now we also have 2 huge potholes appeared on the bridge and junction in Abridge, they are car jarring size holes and this is what shows on the portal – last updated 6 January

And I’ve just seen this on Facebook

Then you have the junction with Epping Lane – again this part of the road has been in complete disrepair for many many months and this is what the portal says

Lastly the approach into Theydon Bois, you have potholes you can’t avoid on the railway bridge some that are also taking up almost the whole carriageway, again this is an unlit road and hard to see in the dark, again there are no warning signs.

We are being pushed by the authorities to move to cleaner greener cars and modes of transport but when the roads are unsafe to travel on who is willing to spend vast amounts of money on a car to be wrecked just doing a local journey?  And to add that electric cars are generally heavier than ICE cars due to the batteries and these potholes and road surfaces are going to cause far more damage to a newer greener car!

It's also very testing whilst driving to be able to drive safely whilst scanning the road surface as well as other traffic the B172 is essentially a Slalom track at the moment – a pothole/damaged road surface should be an occasional defect not a drivers awareness course!

This petition has been reviewed and the following response has been offered:

Dear Nikki

Thank you for your recent petition regarding the condition of the B172.

Please be assured that all publicly maintained roads throughout Essex are inspected in their entirety on a routine basis. The frequency of these inspections is dependent on the classification of the road in question, for example, local roads are inspected annually and priority routes are inspected more frequently on a monthly or quarterly basis due to the important function they perform within the highway network.

The B172 is classified as a priority route which is inspected on a quarterly basis. The most recent inspection took place on 8 June 2023 and the next inspection is due in September. At the moment no carriageway repairs are planned but the Inspector is monitoring a number of defects for deterioration.

The Highway Inspectors will also perform separate inspections of particular issues in response to reports made by members of the public. If there is a particular issue you are concerned about, you can report this to Essex Highways via their dedicated online Report it Tool: https://www.essexhighways.org/tell-us. You will be given a unique reference number which you can use to track the progress of the inspection and the action taken.

During these inspections the Highway Inspectors risk assesses issues which are then prioritised for repair based on their severity and risk to public safety. The timescale for the repair depends on the risk assessment and which type of road the pothole is on. To view the different response times Essex Highways must adhere to, please visit the ‘Potholes’ page of the Essex County Council website: https://www.essexhighways.org/potholes

Thank you for writing to me.

Kind regards

Cllr Lee Scott
