E-Petitions

The Council welcomes petitions and recognises they are one way in which people can let us know of their concerns.

All petitions should comply with our petitions policy and can be related to issues that affect the residents of Essex.

If you are considering raising a petition about a planning application or planning policy document you may find it helpful, before starting, to seek additional information by sending an email to: mineralsandwastedm@essex.gov.uk for applications or mineralsandwastepolicy@essex.gov.uk for policy documents. If possible, please quote the application reference or document title in your email and also please use it in the text of your e-petition if you decide to raise one.

By signing an e-petition you agree that your e-mail address may be shared with other signatories to that petition in any electronic correspondence to the lead petitioner.

Respect Our Flag, Bring Epping Together

We, the undersigned who live in the town of Epping, love our national flag and are proud of our country. However, we are increasingly concerned by the way flags are being displayed on signs and lampposts across Epping, the motives of some of those organising this activity, and the atmosphere it is creating within our community.

Many residents have reported feeling intimidated or uneasy by the behaviour of some individuals involved in putting up flags, including aggressive conduct and actions that have left people feeling uncomfortable in their own town. What should be a symbol of national pride and unity is, for many local people, becoming associated with division and fear.

Epping is a proud and welcoming town. We believe our national flag should be displayed respectfully and appropriately, in a way that brings people together rather than divides us. The current situation, including people climbing lampposts, blocking roads and confrontational behaviour, cannot continue.

We recognise that residents hold a range of views on immigration and national issues. However, intimidation, hostility and division are not acceptable responses, and no political cause should seek to weaponise a symbol that belongs to all of us.

We therefore call for:

  1. A respectful and appropriate approach to displaying our national flag in Epping, including consideration of organised, community-led displays that reflect genuine civic pride.
  2. Local discussions between councillors, police, council officers, faith groups and community representatives to address growing concerns around intimidation, division and community cohesion.
  3. A renewed focus on bringing Epping together, celebrating what unites us, what is great about our country, and all those who proudly call Epping home.

Epping is our hometown. We want a community built on pride, decency, mutual respect and unity, focusing on what brings us together, not what drives us apart.

Epping Residents - Sign this petition to support a respectful solution to flying our flag that protects both community pride and community cohesion in Epping.
